Shaping the Future of Sailing Through Foiling

Foiling is rapidly becoming an important part of modern sailing — from youth development and high-performance dinghies to the highest levels of international competition. Learning to foil develops balance, boat handling, precision, speed, confidence, and decision-making skills that are increasingly valuable across sailing disciplines. Recognizing this evolution, Lakewood Yacht Club and Bay Access Foundation are proud to become an official USFOIL HUB, creating a regional center where sailors can discover foiling, develop their skills, train, and become part of the growing USFOIL HUB community.

A Pathway for Every Sailor

The USFOIL HUB provides a clear pathway from a sailor's first flight to high-performance racing. Its scalable rig system allows sailors to progress on the same platform as their skills, confidence, and physical development grow. Even young sailors coming from Optimist can enter the pathway, making foiling an exciting next step in their sailing journey.

TRYOUT - Development Programs

The Tryout – Development Weekends are designed as an accessible introduction to foiling for sailors who want to experience the USFOIL HUB and learn the fundamentals of foiling in a safe and supportive environment.

The program focuses on hands-on experience, basic foiling concepts, boat handling, safety, and practical time on the water. Sailors will receive the essential guidance needed to become comfortable with the boat, experience their first flights, and begin building confidence on the foils.

These weekends are ideal for sailors who are new to foiling, as well as those who have had limited previous experience and want more time on the water to develop their skills.

USFOIL HUB Clinic

November 21–22

Led by US Foil coaches and successful USFOIL HUB sailors, this two-day clinic offers a deeper and more comprehensive training experience. Sailors will work in detail on foiling technique, boat handling, maneuvers, speed, positioning, tactics, and performance development, with focused coaching designed to help them become more consistent and competitive on the foils. While the Tryout – Development Weekends provide an accessible introduction and valuable practical experience, the Clinic is designed for sailors ready to take a deeper dive into technique and performance.

Prerequisites: Dinghy sailing experience with the ability to independently handle a boat in a range of conditions. Previous USFOIL HUB or foiling experience is not required. Tryout participation is recommended.

USFoil Development Tracker

The Lakewood USFOIL HUB will also connect sailors to the USFOIL Development Tracker, a platform designed to document and support their long-term progression in dinghy foiling.

Sailors can create a personal development profile and build a record of their foiling experience, certification progress, coach assessments, and racing development. As sailors complete different stages of the USFOIL pathway, their progress can be documented and carried forward.

This creates continuity beyond a single clinic or training session. A sailor who starts at Lakewood can continue developing through other USFOIL HUBs, regional clinics, training camps, and national events while keeping the same development history.

For Lakewood sailors, the goal is simple: start locally, keep progressing, and stay connected to the larger USFOIL community.

Regatta Information

The USFOIL HUB is a long-term development project designed to build a sustainable foiling community and pathway at Lakewood Yacht Club and throughout the region. As the program develops, our goals extend beyond introducing sailors to foiling. We aim to support sailors as they progress from their first flights toward consistent foiling, competitive racing, and eventually the formation of dedicated USFOIL HUB teams that can represent Lakewood Yacht Club at regional and national events. Regatta participation will be an important part of this pathway.
As our sailors gain experience and the program continues to grow, we plan to support participation in existing foiling regattas while also exploring opportunities to host USFOIL events at Lakewood Yacht Club.

Our goal is to develop not only sailors who can foil, but a community, teams, and a competitive platform that can grow with the sport. Regatta dates, participation opportunities, and future event plans will be shared with our community as the program develops.
